More and more elderly couples are filing for divorce in the UK, new figures have revealed.

Data published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) shows that despite falling rates of separation across the UK, couples over 60 are showing a spike in divorce cases over recent years.

According to the ONS, more than 11,000 individuals in this “senior” bracket get divorced annually. Research shows that many couples believe they have no incentive to remain together once their children have grown up and left home.

“This is a major social revolution,” said Ros Altmann, Director General of Saga. “This is more proof that life is really changing for the over-60s and for many it’s the start of the next phase of their lives, not the end.”

In total, 7,063 men and 3,977 women aged 61 or over divorced in 2007. The number rose to 11,507 by 2009, and the higher number of men getting divorced in that age group reflects the fact that husbands are usually older than their wives.

By comparison, all other age groups witnessed a decline in the number of divorces, with the effect most pronounced among those aged 31 to 40.
